Introducing Our Intended Venue For 2011!

Pigeon Panic! No doubt you’ve all been wondering where The Summer of Sonic 2011 is going to be held this year. Well, wonder no more! Today we are proud to announce the intentional venue for the fourth annual Sonic convention – Camden Centre, in Central London.

The venue is a large-sized community hall that has been used for a whole manner of professional events – from club nights to televised political debates and monstrous banquets. In terms of what it could offer us as a space, and after visiting the very friendly management there, the SoS team feels that Camden Centre is the perfect place to hold Sonic the Hedgehog’s 20th Anniversary.

As well as a large main hall which can hold roughly 900 people (minus the stuff that we’re going to put in there, obviously), the venue also has a second hall which can be used to offer refreshments to attendees and perhaps hold stalls offering other little trinkets for sale… you’ll get no more info from me on that front! You’ll have to wait and see! On top of this are HUGE restrooms, a cloakroom and a rather large foyer.

Oh, and have you seen the built-in stage? It’s massive.

Getting to the Camden Centre could not be easier, as you can see from the map below. It is quite literally a hop, skip and spin across the road from Kings Cross St. Pancras International rail station – making it the most accessible venue we’ve had for a Summer of Sonic convention yet! It’s also a short walk from Euston rail station too, so if you’re coming from farther away in the UK you can just roll off the train and get involved!

And yes, there is air con.

That’s all we have time to share for now regarding the venue – updates will come thick and fast from hereon in, as we get ever closer to the big day! We’ll be covering the Camden Centre in more detail over the coming weeks too. The process for reserving your ticket to the event will be live soon, please look forward to a special update regarding that.

AAUK Addendum: So yes, there we are. You may ask why it is “intended”, well its very simple: SEGA have to dot the i’s and cross the t’s still – there’s other boring stuff as well which I’m sure the team will gladly leave to me to handle! :P However the process of doing this is underway and the contract is in their hands. Myself and Svend have both toured the location and noted many things about the setup that we think you’ll like and have plenty of ideas on how to get the maximum out of it. We really are going all out on this. From another point UK meetup fans will be aware of a rather familiar public house nearby – The Euston Flyer is literally right around the corner. Now you know where myself and Dreadknux were on St. Patrick’s Day! We’ll have more details about the venue, guests and activities very soon.

This sounds fantastic. The venue looks amazing and with a seperate hall too, they’ll be loads of space! Can’t wait!

It’s also very handy for travel as well, no need to even purchase a tube ticket for those travelling to Kings Cross. Now we just need to find some hotels near by ;)

I can just see the massive crowd of Sonic fans scaring people at Kings Cross.

  3. avatar Kjeldo says:

  7. good thing it’s close to St. Pancrass :D
that’ll be easy for me to come early and stay late ^^

That place looks amazing! Can’t wait until this year’s!! :D

  14. avatar Swiss says:

Perfect venue by the looks of it, hopefully it could be a regular home for the event! :D

Anyone know of the best (cheap-ish) hotels around, I’m having no luck finding reasonably-priced ones. :(

    • avatar Dreadknux says:

It might well be that you’ll have to look a bit further afield for cheap enough accommodation unfortunately, as all the ones close by are quite expensive – the only drawback to this venue really. If you do a search for Travelodge or Premier Inn hotels however, you might be able to find somewhere that’s an easy Tube ride away :)

If you’re prepared to stay in a hostel the Generator’s pretty amazing. Myself and a friend stayed there once and had a good old time drinking copious amounts of Sambuca in their bar before rolling up to our beds. The staff are really nice too. Prices start from £15, which includes breakfast! I turned up on the day, and this was during summer, and for me it was £22. Well worth it!
On their website it says that private rooms are available from £20 a night, which appears to include some perks such as Wifi, but I’m assuming you’ll only get that rate if sharing =P
The other residents were European traveller types, none of whom were noisy or threatening or anything, atleast when we were there! Soo, yea, totally recommended!

Myself and my other friend (Brett) stayed at the County Hotel (actually because of another con!) which is between Russel Square station and Euston (also ridiculously close to SoS). This doesn’t have the cool, young vibe of the Generator, but you will get a hell of alot more privacy! Plus they have nice baths ^^ Rooms are available from £45/night, according to this site : http://www.imperialhotels.co.uk/county

I’ll PM you soon because i’m trying to get a group of people from around the world together – the more the merrier right (if you don’t mind some tagalongs maybe?!) :D

  15. avatar James Churchill says:

Awesome looking venue in a great location. Thanks for securing such a great place for this to be held! I can’t wait to book my ticket for this. Any clues on when tickets can be booked. In the next week, month etc?

  16. 100% Going!! cannot wait :D

  17. avatar HelenBaby says:

I totally did my Uni exams there… it’ll be nice to go there and not be absolutely bricking it for once *gulp*

  18. avatar sheezy93 says:

that is good news :3 thank you and im now know where it is but what i dont know is that how long will it take me to get that XD

  19. Awesome, hopefully I’ll be able to get a hotel room with a mate. Btw, with regards to you guys wanting a Tails cosplayer going we have one in our group for the London Expo in May. She might be going to SoS aswell :)

  20. avatar Shadowprime says:

Fantastic venue guys, though as long as it’s got air conditioning I’m cool with anything D:

tis going to be an epic SOS just by looking at the stage alone :’D

  21. avatar Shayna says:

AH HA! Now I know just where to find you all! :P

What’s the nearest airport? Any hotel suggestions? I’m coming all the way from the US.

    • avatar Kevin says:

I’ll be coming from the US as well, so maybe I can help you in regards to the airport part.

You’ll more than likely be coming into either London Heathrow or Gatwick. If you want to come directly from the airport, the best way is to take the Heathrow or Gatwick Express into Paddington or Victoria stations respectively and then take the underground from there over to Kings Cross/St. Pancras.

If by chance you happen to come into London Stansted, you can take the Stansted Express into Liverpool Station and then take the underground from there.

London has excellent public transportation, so there’s plenty of ways to get from the airport to the general area of Kings Cross/St. Pancras.

  22. avatar Ida says:

Where can I buy SOS tickets:)

  23. avatar Covskin says:

Walking distance of Euston station, you say? Excellent!

Also, awesome stage is awesome. What awesomeness are you planning to take place on that bad boy?

  24. avatar Kevin says:

Kings Cross/St. Pancras station is only a few stops away from where I’m staying on the underground, so this works out great! Even better for anyone that might be coming in via the Eurostar train!

  25. avatar Gayla says:

Exactly where is the facebook like button ?

  27. avatar Knuckles Chaotix says:

So, when will this be held?

  28. avatar Dazz says:

You should probably state which exit to take, since there are literally thousands from Kings Cross. It’s one of the most complicated underground stations to navigate… At least, it is in my opinion. I know the main barrier part leads from the Piccadilly line, and for those coming from Liverpool Street, you’d need to just head toward the Piccadilly line and you’ll see the tonne of gates.

If I recall correctly, when exiting the train, it’s the opposite direction to which the train is moving – so walk against the flow of train. I believe walk to the right as you leave the train…

    • avatar Kevin says:

There looks to be an Underground entrance/exit right on the same side of the street of Euston Road that the Camden Center is on: http://tinyurl.com/3dr8ev2

If there’s someway to get that particular one from the train, then that would be the best route.

    • avatar Dreadknux says:

That’s why there’s a map in the post above. :) Long as you can find Euston Road – which will not be that difficult as it’s a huge road and many exits in the station point to it – you should be fine.

  29. avatar 7Force says:

Thats good stuff this mean its really easy for me to get to, just need to get one tube train and I’m there.

  30. avatar lyndsey ball says:

I live in the US and it would be much easier for kids to go to the sonic conventions who also live in the US. I am upset that I wont beable to go to the summer of sonic because I’ve only just heard of it and wanted to go and my parents are having mony issues and we live all the way on the west coast in washington. I’m sure other kids are also sad other than just me, and there are a lot of kids in the US. It would be helpful if the convention would be held in the US next year or the year after. Possibly some were neer a big and popular city. It would also benifit the businesses at the convention because kids spend their mony, fast.

    • Lyndsey. All of us in the community who created Summer Of Sonic and run it are in the UK.

      TSS is in the UK.
      Wrecks is in the UK.
SEGA Europe is in the UK.

I’m afraid as much as we’d really like to do a SOSUS – and have been trying to for several years, its very difficult for us to create a convention in a different continent to the entirety of the staff of the event.

      Sorry, maybe one day.

  31. avatar SONICFAN! says:

WHY WHY WHY? next year can you try to make it in texas! PLEASE, I NEARLY CRIED WHEN I READ THIS!

  32. avatar christine mayor says:

I was really hoping to go with my son rhys top fan of sonic, hes been through a lot and is going through leukemia, cant believe the tickets have all gone ….
